Ski Tips from Holiday Valley

The most important thing that people want to know is how to control their speed. As a beginner skier, you want to be on terrain that's not too intimidating for you because that will cause some problems from the get go. As long as the ski's are across the hill, they're basically not moving as that is used for climbing up the hill and to control the ski's coming down and as long as you turn the ski's coming up the hill, you will always establish our speed control. Stomping is very important for beginners as well. Basically, your ski's are parallel to the hill and just walk up sideways on the sides of the feet..again, as long as the ski's are across the hill, they're not moving. The most important thing is to be calm and patient. As you move down, a very basic position to start turning which allows you to control the speed is by having the backs of the ski's slightly wider than the front. It's what called a gliding wedge or a gliding plow and that allows you to be able to control the front of the ski's and turn them across the hill. As the ski's are kept in a slight "V," this gives a very basic position to be able to turn by guiding the front of the ski's across the hill...the backs are wider than the front and as the ski's are turned across the hill, the skier comes to a stop which is very important to beginners.
