The Bills may have finally found their pass-catching tight end. Shawn Nelson was ranked among the top five tight ends in the draft and fell all the way to Buffalo in the fourth round on Sunday at the 2009 NFL Draft. At 6-5, 240, with a 40 time just a touch under 4.6, Nelson is the prototypical NFL receiving tight end. He caught 16 touchdown passes at Southern Miss, including three in 2008 when he had 53 catches for 557 yards. Nelson is not much of a blocker, but its unlikely that is what the Bills will ask him to do. After Nelson, the Bills took three defensive backs on day two. Vic Harris from Oklahoma was the fifth round pick. A safety in college, Harris was so slow in workouts, most teams were projecting him at linebacker. Hes likely to contribute most on special teams. Cary Harris was the Bills 6th round pick from Southern Cal. Hes a big, physical defensive back with great cover skills and football smarts, but fairly slow for an NFL defensive back. Buffalos final pick was Ellis Lankster from West Virginia. Lankster was a junior college transfer who played corner in college, but lacks the speed for that position in the NFL and will likely play safety. The position switch also makes sense considering Lanksters strengths are in run support and as a ball-hawker. In all, the Bills conclude the draft with a pass-rushing end, two huge guards, an intriguing tight end and four defensive backs.
