October 2008- GoGreen Student of the Month

Holli knows the choices we make have a direct impact on our local environment- that's why she's been an advocate within her own family for making 'green' choices, whether it's finding creative ways to reuse common household objects or opting to use recycled fiber school supplies.  It's also why her mother, Marlene, nominated her for our GoGreen Student of the Month award!  Here, in Holli's own words, is her GoGreen philosophy:

Going Green is a way of life, it is a choice that some make in order to save the only planet that can sustain life, but even after we are gone there will be more to come just as the dinosaurs did before us. Since the Industrial Revolution there has been an increase in pollution, and the years since that period leading up to the terrifying threat and effect we, humans, have on the planet today.

I made the choice a couple years ago to put a major stress on recycling and reducing the energy my family and I use to help save our wonderful planet.  I have started buying and started a collection of recycling t- shirts and tank tops. These shirts are made up of 50% recycled polyester and 50% organic cotton and are produced by the World Wild Life Federation. I have reused some Abercrombie jeans for a bag, and used iron-ons with going green sayings on a canvas bag. I have persuaded my dad change the light bulbs to the energy saving ones. My dad does not have recycling pick-up where he works, so I brought home boxes and put then in our home recycle bin. All of my binders and folders are recycled binders supplied by Office Max and the folders supplied by Wegmans. I am a part of a recycling committee at my high school, which was started around Earth Day during last school year.  This year on Earth Day I brought my dad to clean up the side of a street in the town I live in, we cleaned up one side and had three bags of garbage and I hope to clean up the other side next Earth Day. I am still working on getting my parents to use the Clorox Green Works products. I strongly support wind and solar energy and hybrid cars. I also very much support the flex- fuel that is now being created using corn oil and gas.

We use so much non- renewable resources and it is causing global warming. By recycling plastics and like materials, we are saving the world years of breaking down these non- renewables by reprocessing and reusing these substances. There are some materials that can not be renewed and we need to use wisely like gasoline and oil.
