Amerks On Hand for Paul Newman Tribute

By: WROC-TV
Updated: January 6, 2009

The Rochester Americans will be on hand for a very unusual jersey retiring on Saturday.

The late Paul Newman's #7 hockey jersey will be retired by the Syracuse Crunch.  The actor, who died last month, didn't play minor-league hockey, but his film "Slapshot" has left an enduring legacy.

Newman starred in the movie as player/coach Reg Dunlop, who wore #7 for the Charlestown Chiefs.  Parts of the movie were filmed at the Onondaga County War Memorial in Syracuse back in 1976.

The Paul Newman banner will remain in place for the 2008-09 season.
