Catholic historian Tim Thibodeau of Nazareth College discussed day two of the papal conclave Wednesday on News 8 at Noon.

Thibodeau said after thee votes failing to produce a new Pope there appears to be a divide among the 115 Cardinals in the conclave about what direction the new Pope will take the Catholic Church.  He believes many want a leader who will clean up the Church's internal issues relating to sex abuse and money scandals, while others are angling for a more charismatic leader who will appeal to Catholics across the globe.

Thibodeau noted Pope Benedict the XVI was elected on the second day of the conclave eight years ago.  He said the longer it goes without a decision, the greater the chance a third candidate will emerge as a possible alternative.  In that scenerio Boston Cardinal Sean O'Malley could be a possibility according to Thibodeau.

No American has ever been elected to the Papacy.
