Scardino To Speak In Washington On Gun Trafficking Legislation

By: WROC-TV
Updated: March 12, 2013
One of the West Webster firefighters who was shot on Christmas Eve will testify before Congress Tuesday.

Ted Scardino will appear at a bipartisan House forum on gun trafficking. Scardino supports legislation that calls for tougher penalties for people who buy guns for others. Police believe William Spengler, the man who shot Scardino and three other firefighters, got the weapon illegally from a neighbor. That neighbor, Dawn Nguyen is now facing charges. When someone buys a gun for someone else in order to avoid background check, it is called a "straw purchase," which is what Nguyen is charged with.

The legislation would make gun trafficking a federal crime and impose stronger penalties for straw purchases.
