The game was tight throughout, with the largest lead after any quarter was four points. The Vikings did a terrific job neutralizing Grand Island's center Cassie Oursler.
With six minutes to go and the Vikings trailing by one, Mendon's Courtney Case intercepeted a Grand Island pass and fed it to Lauren D'Hont for an easy layup, putting Mendon in front 32-31. The two schols traded buckets until Powers winner.
The key on that play was Lauren D'Hont's dribbling. The future Canisius Griffin drew attention from Grand Island and was able to split the defense with a bounce pass to a wide-open Powers under the basket.
Mendon is in the state semifinals for the first time since 1999. The Vikings will take on Section II's Troy in the state semifinals on Friday, March 15th at 3:15 pm from Hudson Valley COmmunity College in Troy.
