Waterloo's first field goal didn't even take place until the first minute of the second quarter when Lindsay Johnson scored on a layup. Waterloo broke out of the cold snap in a hurry, with 18 points in the second quarter to take a 20-19 lead into halftime.
The game stayed within 5 points for the entire second half. With a one-point lead and under 90 seconds to go, Olean had a three-pointer rim out that would have given the Huskies a two point lead. Waterloo grabbed the rebound and Johnson finished the fastbreak with a layup to put Waterloo in front by three.
Waterloo hit their free-throws down the stretch to win it. Johnson ended the night with a game-high 15 points. Waterloo forward Lauren Deming finished with 12 points. On the other side, Olean's Sara Ziegler had a team-high 11 points with Kaylee Pearl right behind her with 10.
Waterloo will take on the winner of Region 2 in the Class B state semifinals next Friday at Hudson Valley Community College in Troy. It's the first time in the state semi's for Waterloo since 2005.
