"How's everybody? You had a good morning so far?" asked Brian Zimmer, as he zipped down the hallway at Willink Middle School.

6th graders slapped him high-fives and cheered as he walked by.

At school, students know him as Mr. Zimmer, their assistant principal.

"I get to give back to the students I get to give back to the teachers, and find ways to make Webster schools great," said Zimmer.

He is also a role model outside of school by wearing a different kind of hat.

"I have been able to help people in their worst times and make it better, even if its something simple as saving something precious, a family photo. That is gratifying," said Zimmer.

He's one of West Webster's newest firefighters.

"After a year I will get one that has my firefighter number as well as name," he showed off his helmet that is inscribed with the word - probationary.

Zimmer signed up in July when he moved to the area but he had to wait.

Then the West Webster tragedy happened. Four firefighters were shot and two were killed when their fire truck was ambushed on Christmas Eve morning.

"It put that itch back more that I wanted to do it immediately," said Zimmer.

Zimmer served in Gates for 7 years. He was a fire lieutenant and commissioner during his time there.

He also idolized his firefighting dad and uncle growing up.

"Grew up with it as a little kid, [I] used to watch the firetrucks rolling out of the door," said Zimmer.

Al Sienkiewicz, spokesperson for the West Webster Fire Department said Zimmer is the ideal volunteer.

"He understands the commitment, he knows he is getting into a busy department. We appreciate his experience and training from the past," said Sienkiewicz.

There still is a waiting list at West Webster.

"They could be on a waiting list for 6 months to a year before spots open up," said Sienkiewicz.

Zimmer said it's well worth the wait.

"I am proud to wear this uniform, great to be part of this organization," said Zimmer.
