Rochester got the largest of the grants, totaling $4.5 million. That is because it saved the most out of all the districts- $10 million worth. We talked with Superintendent Bolgen Vargas just as he returned from Albany. He says it gives the district a chance to focus on student achievement.
"What this grant does is allow us to provide a student with more services. For example, we are going to spend some of this money on more early childhood education. Our goal is to get 90 percent of our students to read at grade level by 3rd grade," Vargas said.
The grant will be distributed over three years. Other districts awarded include Queensbury Unified, Newburgh and Kenmore-Tonawanda.
