In the first half, shooting at the basket must have felt like throwing a rock into the ocean for Odyssey and Waterloo.

In the second half, it was like throwing a boulder into a soup can.

Waterloo limited Odyssey to just nine second half points and nothing in the final 6:50 as the Indians narrowly advanced to the state quarterfinals with a 44-39 win at Eastridge High School in the Class B state qualifier Monday night.

Lindsay Johnson scored 18 points to pace the Indians while Lauren Deming chipped in with ten.

Karissa Birthright led the Leopards with 18 points, 13 rebounds and three blocks.

Both teams combined to score 23 points in the second half. In the first half, they had 30 points... EACH.

Odyssey led 37-36 after the third quarter and upped the lead to three on a layup from Emily Addison 70 seconds into the final period. They would never score again.

Waterloo wasn't exactly lighting it up either, but the Indians did just enough. Johnson made a layup to cut the lead to one and Deming followed by going the length of the floor for a lay-in that gave Waterloo the lead for good at 40-39.

Johnson made a short fallaway and was fouled with three and a half minutes to go, but she missed the free throw. The score held at 42-39 for the next three minutes.

With 30 seconds left, Odyssey missed a free throw line jumper. Waterloo got the rebound and the Leopards immediately fouled. The Indians missed the front end of a 1-and-1, but the rebound was tied up and the possession arrow pointed Waterloo's way with 18 seconds to play.

Off the inbound, Odyssey fouled again and this time, Johnson made both free throws to put the game away.

Waterloo will next play Friday night at Buffalo State College against the Class B representative from Buffalo's Section Six. Tip time is 7:30pm.
