Congresswoman Louise Slaughter returned from Washington Friday with good news for victims of domestic violence.

Slaughter was the featured speaker at the annual legislative breakfast held by the Monroe County domestic violence consortium. Congress re-authorized the Violence Against Women Act Thursday, a law Slaughter co-authored. She said the new law adds important protections for gays and lesbians, as well as Native Americans, studens and sex trafficking victims.

"The new things in this bill answer today's questions more than the other bill did so I'm happy with it," Slaughter said.

Slaughter noted the sequester will cause $20 million in funding to be cut from the newly re-authorized law.
