Luke Perry is absolutely devoted to music. Luckily for the rest of the world, his instrument of choice is the trombone. He's been playing since the 4th grade.
"Something about it just sort of fit my personality," said Perry, a senior at Irondequoit High School. "I'm sort of a fun-loving guy, and something about this slide... it's sort of an awkward looking instrument, and I figured, why not?
Perry is an accomplished improviser, not only in the Jazz Ensemble at Irondequoit HS, but in the Rochester Philharmonic Youth Orchestra. He's studied with the best of the best at both the Eastman and the Hochstein Schools of Music.
His teachers said he elevates the level of performance for everybody.
"I'm interested in going into music for trombone and music education, and maybe play some side gigs that would be really nice," said Perry. "That would be my ideal career."
"We're going to be very sorry to lose him when he graduates, but I can't wait to see all the successes that he's going to have," said Casey Springstead, Perry's instrumental music teacher.
"You're work isn't ever done, which is why people who pursue music tend to practice a lot," said Perry. "It's that they legitimately enjoy their instrument, and that's why I do that."
Luke loves to play - he loves to practice - and he's committed to sharing the spotlight.
