Beware of bogus IRS emails

By: WROC-TV
Updated: February 25, 2013
The Internal Revenue Service is warning taxpayers to beware of emails out-of-the-blue claiming to be from the IRS.

The IRS says criminals take advantage of taxpayers online, especially during tax season.

Scammers use the IRS name or logo to make the message appear authentic.  The phishing scam is an attempt to trick people into revealing personal and financial information.  Criminals then use the information to commit identity theft or steal money.

The IRS says anyone who receives such an email should not attempt to reply to it or open any attachments.  The IRS does not initiate contact with taxpayers by email or social media to request personal or financial information.
