East Avenue Wegmans Closing Saturday

By: Ashley Zilka
Updated: February 22, 2013
The hours are numbered for the East Avenue Wegmans.

The doors will close at 6 p.m. Saturday, but already you won't see much in stock. What's left will be donated to Foodlink.

Although some shoppers aren't thrilled about the closing, they know better things are to come.

"I'm excited. I'm kind of sad too because we've been coming here for years, but you got to make way for new. Change is good! You know?" said Phyllis Haviland of Rochester.

"I'm only looking forward to the wider aisles. That's it. The rest, I just love it nice and small. The restaurants, we can go anywhere, but I'm looking forward to the aisles being a little bit wider," said Linda Komenski of Rochester.

Wegmans will demolish the old building in late March or early April. That will make way for the new store and a bigger parking lot.

"I guess I'd like to see what new things they're going to have, because you know they're going to have something new, right?" said Haviland.

And Phyliss is right. This Wegmans will have a new Italian restaurant. The grocery store will officially open on May 19 and the restaurant will open a few weeks later.

The East Avenue pharmacy will move to a temporary location directly across the street on Sunday.
