An estimated 1,000 people turned out at MCC Thursday with hopes of finding a job. More than 60 companies participated in a job fair at the college.

Among the hundreds gathered at MCC for the 5th annual Career Conference and Job Fair was Pam Pupatelli. She has been job searching for just over a year.

"It's all about networking, getting to know people.  There's people at this event that I've seen at other events," Pupatelli said.

Pupatellis is looking for a call center or customer service manager position. She did her homework, specifically targeting Excellus, Sutherland and Goodwill.

"You just keep on meeting people and talking to people, and the more people you talk to and stay positive it helps you with your search," she said.

For the companies who've signed on this job fair offers great exposure.  Klein Steel expects to receive anywhere from two to three hundred resumes.

"We're sort of off the beaten path a little bit, so to be out in front of the public, people can come to us, they get to know us, ask great questions and we can tell them about what Klein Steel has to offer as an employer of choice in the community," said Rob Sihto of Klein Steel Services.

Each company is required to show proof of job openings to Rochester Works, which partners with MCC and the State Labor Department to put on the fair.

"I feel like this event is needed and we feel good about being able to provide it every year," Christina Bakewicz said.

Pupatelli is among those grateful. In this Internet age, there is still something to be said for having that personal connection.

"There's nothing like networking one on one with someone, although it's nice to establish a report on LinkedIn, there's nothing like looking in someone's eyes, as we're doing right now, and having a conversation," she said.
