A Federal Trade Commission report says as many as 42 million Americans have errors in their credit report.

Of those, 20 million are considered significant mistakes. That could prevent approval for mortgage or car loans, or force you to pay a higher interest rate. The Consumer Data Industry Association says the report is incorrect, saying 98 percent of reports are accurate. It is recommended to look at your credit report from all three major credit bureaus.
