MCC's downtown campus is currently located in the Sibley Building on Main Street. The new owner of the building, Winn Development, wanted MCC to stay. Several weeks ago, it presented lawmakers and MCC leadership with its own plan. Winn said the plan would save MCC and county taxpayers at least $18 million, compared to the move to Kodak.
The legislature's vote is a defeat for Rochester Mayor Tom Richards, who wanted MCC to stay in the Sibley Building. In a statement Tuesday night, Richards said the move will needlessly cost taxpayers millions of dollars, especially since the college has not said how it will cover operating costs at the Kodak site.
