Currently, the law allows anyone with a concealed carry permit, except for county employees, to bring a gun into the county office building. Minority Leader Carrie Andrews is co-sponsoring legislation that would make it only legal for law enforcement and peace officers to have guns in the building. She says those officers are trained to protect residents and employees in the event of an emergency.
"I feel safe in this building so I don't have personal concerns about that but I do think that this is something in today's day and age that makes sense. It's something that people probably think like I did that they cant in fact bring a gun into this builfing," Andrews said.
Members of Shooters Committee on Personal Education (SCOPE) say the state legislature is the only group who can legally make this kind of law. If the law passes, SCOPE plans to challenge it in court.
