Gun owners have a lot of questions about the New York Safe Act.  With so many types of guns out on the market they're having a tough time navigating the new legislation, "I own a bolt action rifle built on to an AR lower, so what is it," asked one gun owner at Tuesday night's meeting.  State officials are doing their best to provide answers at public forums, "I understand that a lower can't have what's there, so whether than debate it, because it's a great question, call [1-855-LawGuns]," answered Steve Hogan, First Deputy Counsel for the New York State Police.

Some questions about specific weapons and enforcement fell into a grey area.  Tony Dalssanto wasn't satisfied with the answer to a question about whether or not permits for semi automatic weapons would have to be shown, "a question was asked later which was regarding probable cause, if I'm pulled over for a traffic cause now and I happen to have a gun in the trunk does that give him now probable cause to look through my car and find this weapon and say prove to me that that's registered," said Dalssanto, "so no that made me more uneasy."

Jeddy Tranquill says his questions about what the punishment would be if a gun owner has more than seven rounds in their magazine weren't answered either, "I'm not sure if it's a misdemeanor, a felony, they still haven't answered that," explained Tranquill, "I don't think they're sure what it is."

Simpler questions about gun registration, permit renewals, and background checks were answered, "I got my answer today about when they were going to have to inform people and they would have to re-certify their permits," explained Dan Jacobs, "that was one question I was wondering about."

Although everyone didn't leave with the answers they wanted, many did leave the meeting satisfied, "they're doing a good job in getting information out on a thing that is very unpopular for many," said Dalssanto.

Former Monroe County District Attorney Mike Green, who now serves as the Executive Deputy Commissioner for the state's Division of Criminal Justice Services helped lead Tuesday night's meeting.

The state has set up a hotline to answer questions about the NY Safe Act.   Call 1-855-LAW-GUNS.
