Students Spending MLK Day Doing Service Projects

Updated: January 21, 2013
Some local high school and college students gave back to the community to honor Martin Luther King, Jr.

Students from Brighton High School and the University of Rochester helped build a Habitat for Humanity home in Rochester's Josana neighborhood. For some, it was the first time they have done this kind of work. But it was a rewarding way to spend the day off from school.

"They're out here, and they're helping build homes for low income families and taking a little bit of time out to really live the message that Dr. King gave us that we're all one big community and we're all in this together," organizer Deanna Varble said.

"On Friday at school we were shown this video how Martin Luther King would have wanted today to be a day of service and it's not just a day off from school you should really get out into your community and do something to help your community, the world," Brighton student Sarah Tunnell said.

Students from Brighton are trying to raise $65,000 to build another home. If you would like to donate to their cause, click here.
