Skate Park Proponents Hoping For City Funding

A recreation project that has been years in the making faces a crucial test. Rochester City Council could vote next week on funding for a new skate park downtown.

A city council committee is talking about the skate park and whether it is worth spending almost $50,000 on. The skate park has been in the works for four years and will cost around $2.5 million. Aaron Costa is the owner of Krudco Skate Shop. He is also a member of the group ROC City Skate Park. They continue to hold fundraisers for the project. The $50,000 from the city will go towards the design team for the park. The skate park will include picnic tables, benches, a BMX park and roller blade park.

"It would help bring people here. It could help bring events here and contests, concerts, all sorts of things. It provides Rochester with another venue that's low maintenance and constantly open and constantly being used. People will travel to here," Costa said.

So far, ROC City Skate Park has raised $80,000 on their own. Even if city council approves the $50,000 on Tuesday, there is still a long way to go. But organizers say the city's support is crucial. They are hoping to start building the park in 2015.
