Are the winter doldrums keeping your kids indoors? How about giving ice skating a try? The city of Rochester is offering free lessons to teach your kids the basics.

For the next six Saturdays, this empty ice rink at Manhattan Square will be stocked with small skaters. Kids ages 5-12 can learn the ins and outs of ice skating for free thanks to a partnership between the city of Rochester and the Go Figure skating school.

"The Go Figure school will have individual instructors and go out into individual groups and work with those kids with their skills," city athletics coordinator John Picone said.

The students will be broken up by age and skill level to learn the basics, and have some time to practice on their own.

"It could be anything from marching forward, basic stops, the proper forward skating," said Mary Monell, the Owner and Director of Go Figure Skating school. She will teach the free classes at Manhattan Square Park.

She loves coaching, not only for what she takes away from it, but for what your family will gain.

"It brings you back to the day when you were just learning how to skate," she said. "Ice skating is a really great way that not only your child, but the entire family can get out and have a lot of fun together while staying fit."
