Tonight's Golden Apple nomination came from a young lady who sees firsthand how hard teacher's work outside of school. This week Kevin Doran surprises Heather Kerr from the Universal Pre-K program at Midlakes Primary School.
Heather Kerr's
entire family showed up at Midlakes Primary School to help with our surprise. Her
daughter Bryanna wrote to tell us what a special teacher she is.
"Dear News 8, My
name is Bryanna Houser and I am going to tell you why I think my Mom should be
nominated for the Golden Apple Award. My
Mom is very caring to her Universal Pre-K kids. She cares about each one of
them just like she does me and my sister. My Mom is also a very good mother.
She works very hard."
"She really
deserves the Golden Apple Award!" says Bryanna.
Well that's good
enough for me...
Heather?
Congratulations. You're the winner of a Golden Apple Award for being an awesome
teacher, surprise. And guess who nominated you?
I have no idea.
Bryanna!
Heather is a busy
teacher. She's Family Facilitator of the
Universal Pre-K program.
"Being a
family facilitator she works with all 51 children, because we have an afternoon
program too. All the families, she wears many hats throughout the day. I never
see her idle. But she's always calm and
patient," says Mary Ann Gillman, Midlakes Universal Pre-K teacher.
"You go home
and you think about the families and you think about what more you can do for
the kids...so definitely," says Heather.
Mary saw
greatness in Heather years ago.. .she was her teacher in third and fifth grade!
Did you think
she'd ever become a teacher then?
"Oh yes, she had
a lot of the fine qualities that it takes to teach."
What's it mean
that Bryanna would write to us and say come and meet my mom?
"Bryanna's a
special girl, she's a special girl."
Well, the apple
doesn't fall far from the tree...
Heather Kerr is a
News 8 Golden Apple Award winner.
