The first big snow storm of the season was an early Thursday morning challenge for plows, drivers and shoveling residents.

The main arteries in and around the Rochester region, including 490 in downtown Rochester were cleared by plows from the New York State Department of Transportation.  "We work on a 24 hour clock," said NYS DOT spokesperson Lori Maher.

There are 37 State plows operating in Monroe County alone.  Maher said they began salting the roadways in preparation for the storm at 5 p.m. on Wednesday.  Even on cleared roads Maher was quick to note drivers need to leave extra time to reach their destination and take extra care behind the wheel.  "Drivers need to anticipate when they are going to stop and begin breaking early," she said.

While local plows worked to clear side roads, residents were busy digging out from the storm.  Robert Rodgers of Rochester needed about an hour to free his car from the snow.  When asked what his reaction was when he walked out of the door Thursday morning, he said with a laugh, "I can't say that on camera."
