Not many people are aware that fire commissioners are elected and that they are the ones who determine how some of your tax dollars are spent.
In 2010, in the Brighton Fire District, only 20 people voted.
Rick Garrett is the Chairman of the Brighton Fire Commission. He says the commissioners are the people who say how the tax dollars will be spent. They determine things like equipment, housing and manpower for fire protection in your district
"They represent the taxpayers and are also responsible for the quality of fire protection. It's ultimately for the taxpayers," said Rick Garrett.
This year, there may be a bigger turnout. Garrett says that's because there are several competitive races this year in Monroe County.
