The department is lauding a high number of women and minority recruits. Ads have been running since June to increase the number of women and minority applicants. Billboards were also put up throughout our area. The new class, which began November 19th, includes 24 city residents. Of those 24, there is one Asian male, two white females, one African-American female, 11 African-American males and nine white males. The city says this diverse class was achieved through visits to job fairs, schools and colleges, along with efforts by City Council and city churches.
The campaign was organized by the Fireman's Association of the State of New York.
