Saturday morning, about 100 people will be climbing the stairs at 1 Bausch and Lomb Place for a good cause, and some, for a very good reason.

Like Brockport firefighter Zach DeLany.

"I'll be climbing to raise awareness toward lung disease, specifically Roger Smith," says DeLany. "He was a 40 year member of the Brockport Fire Department and just passed away October 24th."

About 2.5 million New Yorkers are affected by lung diseases like asthma, lung cancer and COPD.

Proceeds from the first ever "Fight for Air Climb" in Rochester will directly help to fund lung disease research, advocacy and education.

"We'll be providing everybody with a bib number, a start time and a timing chip," says Bonnie Webster, Development Director for the American Lung Association, "and when your number is called, it's time to race up the stairs."

Racers are from all ages and abilities, including teams of firefighters toting along an extra 50 pounds of full gear.

"I've been training a lot for this," says DeLany. "I'm try ing to better my skills as a firefighter, and also honor Roger."

So if you think you have what it takes to climb over 450 steps and make it to the top of the 20th floor, come on out and sign up in the morning. Or, if you can't make the climb, you can always donate.
