County Executive Maggie Brooks and Rochester Mayor Tom Richards addressed the media Tuesday morning. Brooks rescinded the evacuation orders as of 9:30 a.m. About 2,200 people along the lake shore were evacuated around 8 p.m. last night. They were taken to the five emergency shelters the county opened up. We asked officials why they waited before ordering the evacuation.
"The order that was issued was narrow enough in order to minimize disruption. You do this early your gonna wind up ordering a huge area and you could cause a worse problem than you have," Richards said.
"We wanted to make sure hat it was for the right reason and that was to protect he safety of the public. When we were certain that the was the case when we had all hte information about the storm that it was going to escalate the way we thought it was at the beginning we made the call," Brooks said.
Of the five shelters, only the one at the Dome Arena remains open at this hour.
