Students in Irondequoit are getting a first hand lesson in the dangers
of texting and driving.
A distracted driving simulator has only been touring for the last six months and Thursday's visit at Irondequoit High School was the first in the area.
Assemblyman Joe Morelle encouraged Nationwide Insurance to bring it here. Irondequoit High students got behind the wheel in the simulator.
The test was to get a friend home but that friend was distracting, telling the students to go faster, call a friend, and text behind the wheel.
In all of the scenarios students swerved, were forced to stop, and in almost every case crashed because of the distractions.
Nationwide Insurance says 80 percent of all accidents are caused by distracted driving and texting or talking on the phone are a major part of that, and students say they realize it's not just a game.
