CA Stuns Victor In Section V "Fog Bowl"

By: Thad Brown
Updated: October 20, 2012
Under the cover of fog, Canandaigua came to Victor and stole a berth in the sectional semifinals.

Austin Coyne hit Anthony Pagliano with a touchdown on the Braves' first possession of overtime and Nate Bellis made the point after to give (6)Canandaigua a 28-27 upset win over (3)Victor Friday night on High Street.

The entire second half was played through a fairly thick fog. Each bench had trouble seeing plays on the far sideline. Braves Head Coach Jeff Welch even admitted to having concerns calling the decisive pass play in overtime because he wasn't sure Pagliano would be able to see the pass coming.

The Braves led 14-7 at the half, but Victor took the first possession of the second half and waltzed down the field. Tommy Wagner capped the drive with a short touchdown run and the game was even at 14.

Canandaigua went ahead early in the fourth quarter. Coyne lofted a 53 yard completion to Kirk Thomas who was tackled at the one. Sean Outhouse went over the pile on the next snap and the Braves were in front 21-14.

The score held until Victor took over with 2:15 remaining at their own 23 yard line. The Blue Devils overcame false start and holding penalties on back to back snaps that resulted in 2nd and 20 to move the ball into Braves' territory.

The Wagner brothers accounted for almost every yard on the drive. Tommy went straight ahead for 20 that got Victor to the 19. Three plays later on 4th and 7, Mike Wagner kept on a run-pass option for a 15 yard game tying touchdown run with only 34.6 seconds left.

Victor got the ball first in overtime and Tommy Wagner ripped off a 16 yard run down to the two yard line to set himself up for a two yard score on the next play. However, the Victor point after try missed just inches to the right and the Blue Devils had to settle for a six point lead.

Canandaigua didn't take long to answer. On the second snap, Coyne rolled right and found Pagliano at the 15. He turned and was nearly tripped up at the five, but stumbled just long enough to reach the goalline with a game tying touchdown. Bellis' PAT was right down the middle and the celebration was on for the boys in red and white.

Pagliano and Jaymin Ransom finished with 182 yards rushing combined for the Braves. The Wagner brothers had 289 yards for Victor. Tommy led the way with 165 in his final game for the Blue Devils, while sophomore QB Mike had 124 and each scored a touchdown.

Canandaigua moves on to play (2)Brockport in the semifinals next Friday in the second game at Sahlen's Stadium. Kickoff is tentatively scheduled for 7:30pm.
