The beach was closed for the season back in July after the substance was discovered. It is still unclear what the goo is, but a professor at the SUNY College for Environmental Science and Forestry says the substance is most likely used crankcase oil from vehicles dating back to the 1920s. The cost of the cleanup will be divided between the city and DEC. The cleanup is expected to take four weeks.
