Woman Unaccounted for After Major Fire in Castile

By: Ben Amey
Updated: October 2, 2012
A woman is unaccounted for after a major fire this morning on Main Street in Castile, Wyoming County. The fire started just before 2 a.m. at a building that contained the offices for the Town and Village of Castile, a restaurant, and an apartment.

Fire crews believe the fire started on the second floor of the building. They are not sure if anyone was inside the apartment at the time of the fire.  Crews on scene say the woman, who lives above a restaurant, has not yet been reached by family or friends.

None of the fire hydrants near the fire were working at the time.  The town of Castile is in the process of re-doing its water mains, and water had to be trucked in by tankers from other fire departments. More than 20 fire companies were called in to help with the fire, and another 16 companies were placed on stand by.

We have been told that the town records have been retrieved from the first floor of the building, and that Town and Village officials are meeting to discuss where offices will be housed in the future.

We will have updates on this story as they become available.
