Bishop Clark has known about this day since September 7th, but it was not official until 6 a.m. Friday morning. The resignation is final, but there is not a new bishop just yet. Instead, Pope Benedict XVI appointed the Bishop of Syracuse, Robert Cunningham, as Apostolic Administrator of the Rochester Diocese. He will stay in that position until a new bishop is named. Father Joseph Heart will serve as Bishop Cunningham's delegate. Bishop Clark admits he was surprised by the quick transition, thinking it would take much longer, but he is ready for the next chapter of his life.
At this time, they do not know when the 9th bishop will be named or who it will be.
