It is "Greentopia" week in Rochester. A number of events have been taking place and this weekend is the ecofest!
From green fashion, to outdoor greenery. The greentopia festival is taking over Rochester.
"The dress is made out of vogue magazines, and then some refurbished clothes inside so it's not super itchy," says Melissa Murphy. She made the recycled dress and several others. They will be showcased in a fashion show happening Saturday night.
"We are anticipating having a few hundred people, allowing international designers to showcase their work," says Agathi Georgiou. She is marketing the event.
Shawn Dunwoody, the Creative Director of the fashion show says, "we want to recreate ideas in Rochester. We want to be sustainable, we want to be innovative so we are linking all those pieces together."
All of the week long events will culminate in High Falls this weekend where the ecofest is set to take center stage."
"I think we tapped into something people really want to start talking about and understanding and seeing how they can fit that into their lives and I think that was the most surprising thing," says Michael Philipson. He is the organizer of Greentopia.
Last year was the first year for the Greentopia festival almost 20,000 people attended the two day event.
This year, there are 150 vendors who will be sharing green ideas and products Saturday and Sunday.
There has also been a documentary film festival going on all week.
"What it says I think really is that there is a real hunger in our community for this kind of information," adds Philipson.
The Ecofest runs Saturday 10-7 and Sunday 11-5 at High Falls. Admission is free.
