By 5:00 p.m. that day, 200 troopers were in the Greater New York City Metropolitan Area. Within 24 hours, over 500 New York Troopers were deployed to New York City.
A contingent of 500 troopers remained for six months, working around the clock, providing support and security for NYPD, and for security of Manhattan, bridges and tunnels. K-9 units from throughout the state were brought in to Ground Zero. State Police aircraft was also utilized along with "S.O.R.T" (Special response team made up of 40-45 troopers from all over the state).
In our local Troop-E, 50-60 troopers were deployed. Trooper Mark O'Donnell got the call while he was in a meeting, he got in his car and was there before midnight on 9/11. He joined our Kevin Doran to discuss his experience. Click the above video to watch the interview.
