A 19-year-old man died Friday morning after being shot at a Gates shopping plaza while waiting to purchase sneakers.
Montre Bradley of Rochester died at Strong Hospital after being shot just after 4 a.m. "It's senseless," asaid Bradley's grandfather Pastor Richard Williams.
Gates Police say a large group had gathered outside the Street Game store on Chili Avenue for a chance to buy a pair of Nike's latest sneaker the Foam Posit. Two men approached the line, there was an altercation and then shots. "It's very sorrowful," said store manager James Poole. The store, which opened at 9:30, had advertised it would have the new sneakers, but didn't anticipate lines would form so early.
"He was a good kid," said Bradley's aunt Denise Seymour. "He earned his money."
Seymour said Bradley moved to Rochester from California five years ago to get away from gangs and violence. "When he first got here we sat down on my porch and he said I want to change my life," she recalled.
Seymour said Bradley worked at Strong Hospital, attended church regularly and was preparing to take classes at Monroe Community College. "He had turned his life around," she said.
Police continue their search for suspects in the homicide.
Bradley's mother, Louise, posted a statement on Facebook:
"My one and only son....I've loved from day one and I will love you until I take my last breath. It's senseless...all this violence over nothing. RIP Tey Tey....always mamas baby boy.
Thank you to all of Montres friends and family."
