Boehner supports Brooks in Rochester

House Speaker John Boehner called for voters in the 25th Congressional District to send Republican Maggie Brooks to Washington during a sold out fundraiser Saturday at the Rochester Riverside Convention Center.
The nation's top GOP leader gave a room full of Monroe County's top Republicans exactly what they came to hear. "Now there's nothing worse than having people elected to office who've never done anything, oh, I probably can think of some of them, alright," said Boehner, drawing laughter from the crowd.
The Speaker talked about winning the White House, addressing the country's debt, and, of course, getting Brooks inside the beltway. "If you want somebody who is going to stand up and do the right thing for the right reasons, you want to send Maggie Brooks to the United States Congress," he said.
Boehner referred to Louise Slaughter as the incumbent, and talked about the Democrats failed record. Brooks said voters have a choice. "I'm running for Congress because I have the proven record and the collaborative experience to join with Speaker Boehner and his team to fix what's broken," she said during her remarks.
Slaughter's campaign blasted Boehner's visit, saying in a statement the Speaker represents Republican's out-of-touch, anti-middle class agenda. Outside the Convention Center a small group protested tax breaks for millionaires. Boehner said that's not the issue driving this election cycle. "The issue is the economy, the issue is jobs," he said. "The American people are saying it loud and clear."
Brooks echoed many of the Speaker's themes, but said his support doesn't mean she's in lock-step with the National Republican platform. "I have a record," she said to reporters after the luncheon. "People know how I've governed, and when people start saying she won't do this, this, or this, all they have to do is look at the record and they'll see where my values are and where my priorities are."
Boehner's remarks lasted about 20 minutes and he did not take questions from the media. Between the VIP reception and luncheon, about 400 people attended the fundraiser, which went for $150 a plate.
