The State Thruway Authority, which overseas the Erie Canal, says that
employees have assisted roughly a dozen boaters who were stranded in a closed
section of the Erie Canal.
That happened in Orleans County in the Village of
Albion. Crews and contractors are continuing to stabilize a portion of a bank
on the canal.
There was also a partial failure in that area on July 30th. Boat
traffic has been suspended for a 25 mile long stretch from Middleport in Niagara
County to Holley in Orleans County.
Boats had been stranded on the western end
of the Erie Canal and a crane was brought in to help remove those boats.
All
this work is being done because a large sinkhole developed south of the Canal on
Monday night.
