Officials with Governor Cuomo's office are surveying damage in the Southern Tier where a state of emergency has been declared.  Severe thunderstorms brought high winds Thursday evening, reaching 60 miles per hour.  Officials with the National Weather Service are surveying the area today to determine if indeed a tornado touched down.

Major damage can be seen across the Elmira area, dozens of trees have been snapped in half, landing on rooftops, blocking driveways, and streets.
So far no major injuries have been reported.

As of Friday afternoon, approximately 43,000 customers in the Southern Tier are without power and hundreds of crews are working to restore service. NYSEG has sent 81 line crews and 49 service crews to Elmira to help restore power to customers there.

Volunteers are knocking on doors and the Red Cross has set up a shelter and is providing food and clothing to those who need help.
