New York State's labor force grew by 105,000 since July 2011. While that may be good news, when more jobseekers enter or re-enter the labor market due to renewed confidence about finding employment, an area's unemployment rate temporarily rises.
The growth in the labor force contributed to a rise in the state's unemployment rate from 8.6 percent in May 2012 to 8.9 percent in June 2012.
In Rochester the private sector added 9,200 jobs from June of 2011 to June of 2012, and that's an increase of 2.1 percent. Some of the biggest job gains were in professional and business services.
