Democrats in the Monroe County legislature who are looking to make changes to the county's burial assistance program say their proposal has been shot down.
Democrats had introduced legislation that would have ensured the upkeep and care for the deceased in cemeteries that work with the county.
Democrats in the legisature had proposed a cost-neutral proposal to restore burial assistance funding. Democrats, who are in the minority, say their efforts have been stifled by the Republican majority.
Members of the Democratic minority say they would have restored grant funded for funeral arrangements for needy families.
The legislators say that the decrease in funding for the program has forced families to resort to cremation, which in some cases has been against the decedent's wishes.
