Beach-goers had trouble finding a place to cool off Friday

Swimming is closed at Ontario and Durand beaches due to bacteria. Swimming in water with high bacteria levels is dangerous, especially for children and seniors. It can make you sick, mainly causing gastrointestinal issues. The state says this contamination is caused by storm water run off and sewage. Last year, the Natural Resource Defense Council named Ontario Beach among the most frequently closed beaches in the state.

Two consecutive tests must find the water to be free of E. coli before people can swim again.
