Ryan Chalmers, a graduate of Churchville-Chili High School, qualified for the games last weekend at the US Paralympic Trials in Indianapolis. After placing third in four wheelchair race events, Chalmers assured himself a spot on Team USA and qualified for the marathon event. Chalmers, who has been competing in wheelchair sports since the age of 8, is a well-established wheelchair athlete. He has won numerous awards in wheelchair basketball and track & field events and has competed in competitions all over the world.
After recently graduating from the University of Illinois at Urbana-Champaign, Chalmers currently serves as mentor for other disabled athletes. Today he works with Stay Focused, a non-profit organization that uses SCUBA diving as a medium to empower disabled youth and teach leadership skills. Following the Paralympics, Chalmers plans to continue shedding a positive light on athletes in the disabled sports community.
