Wings Back-To-Back HRs Lead To Win

Villarreal surrendered back-to-back homers to Matt Carson and Clete Thomas in the first inning, propelling the Red Wings to a 7-4 victory over the Bats on Father's Day at Louisville Slugger Field.

Carson hit a three-run blast to dead center, his first of two on the night, scoring Tsuyoshi Nishioka and Danny Valencia, and Thomas followed him with a shot to nearly the exact same spot. It was just the second time this season the Bats had allowed back-to-back home runs.

Rochester (32-37) got its third series win in its last four tries, as Louisville (22-49) lost for the fifth time in its last six games.

Carson proved to be the thorn in the Bats' side all night, finishing 3-for-4. He homered for the second time with a solo shot in the sixth, then added another run in the eighth after a wild pitch by Carlos Fisher.

Rene Rivera went 3-for-4 with an RBI, and Pedro Florimon added two hits for Rochester.

Villarreal took his fourth loss of the season, giving up six runs on seven hits with a walk and four strikeouts in six innings. Danny Dorn was the lone Bats player with multiple hits, finishing 2-for-2 with a pair of walks, and Paul Janish had two runs scored to lead the Louisville offense.

Rochester starting pitcher Samuel Deduno was erratic, striking out the side in the second and third, but also loading the bases in the third and fourth, including a walk to Cody Puckett that brought in Janish for the first Bats' run of the game. Deduno finished with one run allowed on two hits with four walks, two hit batsmen and six strikeouts in 3.2 innings.

Deduno's replacement, Casey Fien, picked up his second win of the season after holding the Bats hitless with one walk in 2.1 innings. Kyle Waldrop was perfect for the final five outs, earning his first save of the season.

After the blast to Thomas, Villarreal settled down to retire the next nine, but surrendered an RBI single to Rivera in the fourth that crossed Florimon. The second homer by Carson pushed the Red Wings' lead to 6-1 after six.

Back-to-back RBI doubles by Mike Costanzo and Dioner Navarro closed the gap to 6-3 after seven.

Carson got things rolling in the eighth with a one-out single and moved to second on a groundout by Thomas. With Wilkin Ramirez batting, Carson stole third, then took home after Fisher's pitch sailed over the catcher's head.

Corky Miller continued his hot hitting as of late with an RBI single in the eighth, bringing in Janish and cutting the deficit to 7-4 for the last run of the night.

Despite the early runs, the Bats' defense showed their prowess throughout the game. Joey Gathright robbed Sean Burroughs of a sure double with a diving grab in the first, and Janish made a diving catch of his own in the third off the bat of Valencia. Dorn threw out Ramirez at the plate, saving another run in the fourth.
