One listen to Rachel Mills' cello, and you just know this young musician is going places. Rachel has been playing cello for 9 years. "I love the fact that the cello is very close to the human voice," she says. "I think because of that it's really easy to express emotions on the cello." At Webster Schroeder High School, Rachel is a mainstay in the orchestra and string quartet. But she is also a member of the Rochester Philharmonic Youth Orchestra, and has received numerous awards for her artistry. Last year she was selected to be principal first chair cellist in the All-State Orchestra. "I admire her as a person but I really admire her as well as a musician," says Laura D'Angelo, music theory teacher at Webster Schroeder.
"She never looks at the piece the same way, she always finds a nuance, something different in the piece every time she performs it, and I believe that's why she's won so many awards and competitions."
Next year, Rachel will attend the prestigious Oberlin Conservatory of Music.
Her goal is to play in a professional chamber group or orchestra. Her gift makes her one to watch in the years to come.
