Gas prices may be falling but a report shows New Yorkers are paying the highest state tax rates on gasoline in the country.
According to the American Petroleum Institute, New York pays 49 cents per gallon in taxes. That is about half a cent more than California and Connecticut, which tied for number two. Hawaii and Michigan rounded out the top five. Alaska pays the least in state taxes at only eight cents per gallon. According to the report, the figures are determined by a number of factors including environmental fees, storage taxes and the general sales tax.
