Cyberbullying Legislation Clears Hurdle

A proposed law aimed at preventing cyber bullying passed a key committee vote Monday in the Monroe County Legislature.
The law is called "Prohibiting Cyber Bullying in Monroe County" and passed the Agenda/Charter Committee with bipartisan support in a 5-0 vote.
The legislation would protect children under 18 from cyber bullying attacks. Violating the law would be a misdemeanor and carry a penalty of a $1,000 fine and/or up to one year in jail. "Our goal was to go beyond a policy and actually give victims, their families, law enforcement and school districts a way to combat this," said Republican Carmen Gumina of Webster, who is sponsoring the bill.
The full County Legislature will take up the cyber bullying legislation at its meeting on May 8.
