Dr. Stillman Clark, OSHER Lifelong Learning Institute at RIT

Our News 8 Golden Apple Award winner is a retired veterinarian. Doctor Stillman Clark teaches at the OSHER Lifelong Learning Institute at RIT. We honor him on behalf of all the students in the program.

After a successful career in veterinary medicine, Doctor Stillman Clark wasn't done. He's been a big part of the OSHER Lifelong Learning Institute at R-I-T for 16 years. Doctor Clark teaches older adults how to get the most out of life.
 
Students and teachers from other classes gathered outside his classroom to help with our surprise. Doctor Clark told everyone "I am moved and feel like this is what life is all about, just sharing your caring with me as I am with you."

There's an old adage "Some people come into our lives and quickly go, others leave footprints in our hearts and stay there." Student Sandra Chamberlain says that describes Stillman Clark. "And Stillman has given to literally thousands of people. His acceptance of ourselves and our enrichment to continually grow regardless of our age. And he exemplifies that by teaching the class and being a stimulus in a most gentle, profound way."

Sara Connor is Program Director at OSHER Lifelong Learning Institute. "He definitely leads by example. He's an amazing person who has a wonderful gift to bring out the best in people. And get you to look at what good there is around you and to take hold of it."

Doctor Clark's most important lesson is simple. Our lives are richer when we share ourselves with others. He says "Can you imagine just having positive energy all the days? All day long or most of the day? The heart we have is so beautiful it makes us care in the first place and the love we share with others. And then you'll learn too that loves comes back to us."

Dear News 8,

Stillman Clark was born in Los Angles and moved to New Hampshire in 1933. He grew up on a rock strewn, hillside, dairy farm where his family raised Guernsey cattle that provided rich milk which they bottled and sold. He played sports and received his BS from the University of New Hampshire. He graduated from Cornell as a DVM While attending Veterinary School he married his wife Joyce. Together they have 4 children and 9 grandchildren.
While practicing in Vermont, Long Island and Penfield he became intrigued by the relationship that pets have with people, causing him to search a common goal that keeps both partners devoted and bonded.
Joyce and Stillman currently reside in Penfield. He helps with the Pet Loss Support Group at Lollipop Farm. 
We have been privileged to have him as a teacher at the OSHER Learning Institute where for the past 17 years he has been teaching us wisdom to share our self by participating in life that provides positive and loving energies to others.
