In a down economy, scrap metal is a big business. Recycling also has a big environmental benefit.
Recycling scrap metal is not a new idea. But ever since Genesee Scrap on Steel Street in Rochester was acquired by one of the largest scrap processors in North America, business has really taken off."All types of metal, automobiles we'll recycle, old appliances we will recycle, copper, aluminum, brass, car batteries anything you can think of there is a way to recycle it and put it back into the system so it doesn't go into the landfill," said Aaron Weiner, General Manager of Ben Weitsman of Rochester.
Lots of businesses recycle metal by-products, but they've also been reaching out to homeowners.
"We want the homeowner to come out see what a recycling center is bring in materials and learn about it," said Weiner.
And once all of the metals are sorted, they are taken away in trucks like this one to the places that need them."
"They'll melt it down and make it into a new, usable product for another type of company to make new equipment," said Weiner.
Everything from soda cans to auto parts. In 2011, the company handled 55 million tons of materials across North America.
"We feel good doing our part, keeping things out of the landfill. there's no need to send them there. they are renewable, reusable resources."
